Daughters of the Sea: Hannah

Daughters of the Sea: Hannah (Book One)
By Kathryn Lasky

Summery
Hannah has always felt as if she didn't belong in Boston's Home For Little Wonderers, and now is the time that she finally gets to leave. But it is not somewhere she wishes to go. It is onto the orphan train to be put up for adoption at various cities in the newly founded western part of the United States. When Hannah starts to get ill she also starts shedding crystals made of SALT!!!! She knows that when she gets adopted she will not be able to remain in the western part of the U.S. away from the sea.

Hannah is sent back expecting to see the mean old lady who sent her away to the awful place in the west, only to see that she has been replaced by a nicer lady. This lady sees to it that Hannah has a job as a scullery maid in Boston. So Hannah goes to work for the Halaways, one of the richest families in Boston.

When Hannah arrives she immediately sees that it is not what she expected. Then it becomes even more strange when Hannah finds Lila and her cat, Jade, upstairs one day when she goes fills up the cats bowl and start the fire for the night. Lila is a bit strange and becomes obsessed with Hannah, and not in a good way.

What I Thought
This is one of my favorite books to read. It is a great transitional book for when a reader is coming out of children and into young-adult books.

Most of the time I rave about the characters depth and the variety, but in this book the only person who seems to have a back ground in this is Mr. Wheeler and that bothers me. Then one of the other maids seem to have one, but you don't really find out about that until they go to the island itself.

I also thought that Hannah needed to get out more. The only time she wasn't in a house was when she was on the island swimming and when the book first started. It made her seem like closed in person literally and figuratively.

I do like that this is a book about mermaids though. There are not enough books about them, we have sooooooooo many on vampires, werewolf's, and (not as many though) angels, and we are leaving out one of the most important mystical creatures.

Another thing I like is the story line. It always keeps you interested and reading. Once you pick up the book it is like bam, bam, bam and it is arranged nicely so it does not seem like it is moving too fast.

Over all I give this book a 3.5 out of 5. Low I know, but the bads out way the goods in this book.

I Am Number Four

I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore

Summery
John (lets call him this since that is his name for the majority of the book) has moved around his entire life running from the people who destroyed his planet. When the third child who came with John and the eight others dies, John must move again. Now John is next. When Henri, John's guardian on Earth, takes them to Paradise, Ohio, he is ready for a new start and keeping his head down is no problem for John. But when he meets Sarah is it as easy as it has always seemed? Or will John attract just enough attention this time to out himself out to the people he cares about and put their lives in jeopardy when the time comes?

My Thoughts
This was the first sy-fi book I have really ever read. And lets just say, I LOVED it. Pittacus Lore is a fantastic writer and I can not wait until I can check the next book out from the library.

Now because this is so awesome I am going to keep this short and sweet.

My favorite thing about this book was the character. I liked how the author made all of them seem so complicated and make the possibility of hope seem all so alive.

So over all I give this book a 5 out of 5. (Rare I know, but this book deserves it.)

Hope to have you reading again soon,

Summery

Now she has to find her brother with her sister Gabby, but can she do it with out the help of mysterious Luc? Or without help of a hidden organization? Find out in The Beautiful and the Cursed.

My Thoughts
This book has what my local librarian calls the "right of passage." You have to get through the first part before the book becomes any good. That is what happened with this book. However once I got past the slow part I loved it.

The characters were extremely dark and I loved that. There are not many books that has many dark character that are fighting for good.

Other than this there are not that many things to report back. It was a good book, but any mistakes that really jumped out at me.

Over all I give this book a 4 out of 5.
